“New Native Photography will feature more than fifteen Native photographers representing various United States federally recognized tribes, pueblos, and First Nations tribes. Distinguished artists and educators Larry McNeil and Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie, along with the museum’s curator of photography, Katherine Ware, selected the works.
Photographs from more than thirty applicants were evaluated on the basis of vision, technical execution, and cohesiveness as a body of images, with consideration given to images offering a fresh expression of Native experience.
The diversity of work speaks to the richness of Native experience, with photographs ranging from portraiture and landscape to staged, constructed, and mixed media. Funding for New Native Photography was generously provided by Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser; Andrew Smith Gallery; Michael and Jane Wilson,Wilson Centre for Photography; Henry and Connie Christensen III;Paul Sack; James and Linda Ballinger; Alfred Bush; and Joan Myers.
