All Directions in 7 Lines, Collaboration with Melissa Staiger

All Directions in 7 LInes“All Directions in 7 Lines”, is a collaboration with Brooklyn based non-objective painter Melissa Staiger, honouring the seven painters comprising “The Indian Group of Seven”. Seven cut sticks each painted in their own hue incline linking the wall to the floor creating a leaning sequence of vibrancy. A piece of reflective blue plexi literally marks out the liminal space of the gallery, symbolic of the marginal space negotiated by these artists with bold results. This work was created for “Coming into view” a show in response to The MacKenzie Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibit “7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc.” curated by Michelle LaVallee and “highlights work from current Indigenous contemporary artists locally and nationally who are on the cutting edge of their time”.

“These artists, like most, have been inspired by some, if not all of the official Seven, who were punk rock enough to fight anthropological underpinnings of a “folk and craft” title that they shook off as they pummeled their way out of museums and into the 4 white walls of fine art gallery spaces.“ (Leena Minifie, Director Sâkêwêwak)

  1. Terrific work Maria and Melissa! A great idea to honour these artists from the other side of the continent … (Maria I see affiliations with your piece for ‘A Stake in the Ground’ (Galerie Art-Mûr, 2012) as well.

  2. Thank-you Rhonda! Melissa invited me to perform in the gallery during her solo exhibit “Triangle Works” at Janet Kurnatowski Gallery last December and it just felt like the right opportunity to work together. For that show my performance “Messiness of the Imagined Line” took the way she uses angular blocks of colour to break down spacial barriers in painting as its point of departure. For our recent collaborative effort it was great to revisit her process plus she had me sanding/layering up the coats of paint to perfection! As you picked up on I am also not quite done working with cut pieces of leaning wood 🙂
