Montreal in winter with Pablo de Ocampo, Andrea Geyer, Sharon Hayes, Maria Hupfield, Adam Kinner, Dorit Margreiter, Monique Régimbald-Zeiber, cheyanne turions, Jacob Wren (among others).

For this exhibit on identity and institutionalism I use live performance to interpret a selection of labels taken from four different recent exhibitions as scores to reintroduce the physical presence of the artist unified across various venues. The labels will be on display for the duration of the gallery exhibit along with a permanent frosted outline on the gallery door. This performance is titled “Present – Absence” and takes place in the gallery January 2014.

Stage Set Stage is an “exhibition and a series of events that investigate how the Self, as a contingent entity, continuously rewrites and constitutes itself into – as well as out of – various cultural, educational and socio-political contexts. Asking how gestures, poses and actions, in various forms of media and visual translation – from the moving image to spoken text or songs – can challenge their instigated, upheld and contested relationship(s) with cultural institutions, from near as well as far.”

The concept by curator Barbara Clausen, “the core element of STAGE SET STAGE is a mobile structure called Space Set / Set Space, a collaboration between Andrea Geyer and Sharon Hayes from 2012 . As a space within a space, this structure will respond to, and create an architectural framework for each phase and work in the exhibition. Space Set / Set Space is a site-specific device that will offer the participants a platform on which to speak about and act out ideas and issues related to identity and space, allowing the visitor to step in and take part, or simply remain an observer.”

This exhibition is part of SBC Gallery’s Focus Program on sovereignty.
