Jiimaan, Ga ni tha, Venice

Jiimaan Jiimaan (Canoe) is a 20 min 3 part performance over 3 consecutive days using a 9-foot, hand-made industrial felt canoe in Venice Italy at We Crociferi Campo dei Gesuiti for the exhibit Ga ni tha. Made on the premises and responding to the site the canoe embodies balance, relates physically to place, recalls old memories and forges new ones. For this performance, I use the traditional anishinaabe hunting style canoe as a vehicle and metaphor. All areas of the public space are activated from the performer’s body, to surface, altering the site as an extended social space of resilience and personal empowerment. Video based artist Dylan McLaughlin of Invisible Laboratory in Santa Fe documented live performances with a Venetian public audience held at sunset followed by private solo re-enactments at sunrise. Creation of Jiimaan was made possible through support from the Canada Council for the Arts.
